End of month paper work.

Its Monday morning. This week you have to get the VAT returns done, to top it off its pay day on Friday. Your PA has called in sick and the phone has not stopped. 

Your new apprentice has offered to make you tea and toast, and you welcome his keen attitude. He sets off to the lunch room.

He has put the toaster on as the kettle boils. He is day dreaming about the weekend as he waits for the toast to pop up. He is day dreaming about his date on Saturday.

He panics and grabs a metal butter knife  to get the toast out of the toaster. As he puts the knife into the slot he screams.

The electric  shock is severe as he was holding onto the metal sink with his other hand for support. He is now locked on to the sink and toaster as his muscles contract with the deadly current. You were not aware the metal toaster had a fault. The earth wire had broken away inside the plug leaving the toaster in a lethal state. 

Your heart sinks as you hear the scream. You know something is badly wrong, but now is not the day to find out about what you should have done about PAT testing.

Checks should be carried out often enough to ensure there is little chance the equipment will become unsafe between checks.

It is good practice to make a decision on how often each piece of equipment should be checked, write this down, make sure checks are carried out accordingly and write down the results.

You should change how often you carry out checks, according to the number and severity of faults found.


The best way to find out if specialised equipment is safe is to have it inspected and tested by a person with specific competence on that type of equipment. 

This may be the original manufacturer or their authorized service and repair agent. Each device will have a sticker clearly showing the date and test. We will also provide you with a certificate and asset register to demonstrate that you have a policy in place. ​
